DAVID FIRST’S musical life is filled with opposites and extremes. As a performer he has played in raucous drunken bar bands and in pin-drop quiet concert halls with classical ensembles. Past experiences include playing guitar at the age of 20 with renowned avant-jazz pianist CECIL TAYLOR in a legendary CARNEGIE HALL concert. Two years after that he was allowed open access to the analog electronic music studio at PRINCETON UNIVERSITY. Some of the music he made there will be released later this year on DAIS RECORDS. As a composer First has created everything from finely crafted pop songs to long, severely minimalist drone-works. His performances often find him sitting trance-like without seeming to move a muscle, unless he is playing with his re-formed psychedelic punk band, NOTEKILLERS, at which time he is a whirling blur of hyperactive energy. Other projects involving First include MATTER WAVES WITH BERNARD GANN (LITURGY) and KID MILLIONS (ONEIDA) and SWATI – a monthly live drones and acupuncture collaboration at Worksong Chinese Medicine with ISOBEAU TRYBULA, M.S., L.ac. His newest project, THE WESTERN ENISPHERE, is a microtonal drone ensemble exploring First’s concepts of gestural improvisation. First’s music has been called “as spooky as it is scientific.” In THE NEW YORK TIMES and “A BIZARRE CROSS BETWEEN HENDRIX AND LA MONTE YOUNG” in THE VILLAGE VOICE.
